DISABILITY HOUSING REHABILITATION - 2014 to present

Amy Young Barrier Removal Program

In 2010, TDHCA instituted the current Amy Young Program, which was formerly known as the Home Free Barrier Removal Program. The intent is to provide funding for persons of disabilities who need modifications to increase accessibility and eliminate hazardous conditions in their homes. Funding is administered by non-profit groups that perform intake, eligibility and oversee construction.

SLS was selected by IBTS, the area’s program administrator, to perform work on approved homes throughout Galveston County. Tasks focus on bringing homes up to ADA compliance and include the addition of handrails and ramps, widening of doors, adjusting counter tops and cabinets to appropriate heights, installation of notification devices for the visually impaired and installation of accessible showers, toilets and sinks.

To date, SLS has worked on over 100 homes and continues to perform work as needed throughout Galveston County.
