Redwood Valley Fire 2018

Camp Kyen Site Improvements

In early 2018, wildfires ravaged multiple regions of California, including the Redwood Valley in Mendocino County. A large number of homeowners throughout the region were displaced, and State and Federal responders were activated to suppress the fires and assist in disaster recovery. SLS, working under FEMA and project manager Dewberry, was mobilized to improve the strategically located Camp Kyen to accommodate response personnel.

Camp Kyen, owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and located on the northern shore of Lake Mendocino, was a campground historically used for recreational purposes. It was limited in capacity and infrastructure and required significant upgrades to handle the influx of activity.

Within a matter of weeks, SLS completely revitalized the property, improving the water, sewer and electrical systems, as well as performing road improvements and installing new pads and hookups for mobile and modular housing units. The water supply system was also upgraded to meet current standards and the required load capacity, and a new pump station was installed.
