SLS provided rapid construction of two Manufactured Housing Unit (MHU) community sites on Galveston Island and High Island, Texas, to provide temporary housing for displaced residents after Hurricane Ike.
Project Summary
In September 2008, Hurricane Ike impacted the Texas Gulf Coast and brought mass devastation to Galveston County. Thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed, displacing homeowners and causing a major shortage in viable housing options. As a result, FEMA and the State of Texas created community sites for Manufactured Housing Units (MHUs) throughout the affected region to provide short-term living solutions.
In early 2009, SLS was engaged by FEMA and program manager CH2MHILL to construct two of the community sites, on Galveston Island and High Island. SLS mobilized immediately, and within 30 days of engagement, transformed two barren fields into self-sustained MHU residential developments. Working 18 hours per day, seven days per week, hundreds of personnel executed all necessary tasks in record time under very challenging conditions, earning SLS recognition by FEMA, United States Army Corps of Engineers, and CH2MHILL for performance and success.
