Project Summary

SLS was activated by the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to set up a base camp for 250 people responding to the multiple wildfires that burned over one million acres in the Texas Panhandle. Upon receiving the Notice to Proceed on February 29 at 1 p.m., the SLS mobilized within seven hours to set up the base camp near the city of Canadian, TX, to house responders such as firefighters, emergency management personnel, members of the National Guard, and medical staff. The base camp was fully operational within 35 hours when onsite catering provided weary responders with an evening meal.

The SLS team deployed mobile lodging, restrooms, shower and laundry trailers with self-contained sanitation; handwashing stations, light towers, dining tents, and onsite catering operations. As firefighters worked to contain the wildfires, TDEM requested an increase to a capacity of 300 on March 4 through March 8, 2024, and then scaled back to ano ccupancy of 250 for the remainder of the activation.
