SLS was activated by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) on July 8, 2024, to set up a base camp for 100 occupants responding to the damage inflicted by Category 1 Hurricane Beryl. Upon receiving the Notice to Proceed on July 8 at 3 p.m., the SLS team mobilized within four hours to set up cots and an air conditioning unit within the Sugarland TxDOT facility to accommodate the first responders. The base camp was fully operational within 12 hours, when onsite catering provided weary responders with dinner on July 8, and breakfast on July 9, 2024.
The SLS team deployed mobile lodging (bunk trailers), restroom, shower, and laundry trailers with self-contained sanitation, handwashing stations, light towers, a dining tent, and on-site catering operations. As TxDOT worked to restore lighting and signage across the area, we saw daily changes in the camp's population, reaching a peak of 194 workers on July 16.
